After a highly sccessful first year of running the Duke of Edinburgh’s award last year the programme has been expanded and extended to allow nearly 50 pupils from Year 9 and 10 the chance to try something new and gain valuable skills for the future. This weekend saw the Year 9 Bronze award cohort successfully complete their qualifying expedition in Epping forest, just 2 weeks after their practice. The weekend involved becoming completely self sufficent for 2 days, carrying all they required to eat, camp and navigate on their backs. After initially promising to literally throw a dampner on the occasion the weather improved drasitcally to enable the pupils to show fantastic levels of determination, resilliance and no small amount of skill to be able to prove to the external assessor they could survive in the wild on their own!
The assessor said: ‘it was a pleasure to see how well all the pupils worked together, not just within in their teams but as a collective to make sure everyone came out successful. It is a credit to the school to see a bunch of pupils so willing to help each other and show such great levels of commitment and determination.’
