Last weekend the final Duke of Edinburgh expedition of the season took part in the Ashdown Forest, Sussex. With the weather set fair all groups walked at a fearsome pace during the first day as navigated through the country side independently with only a map and a compass. On arriving at the campsite the participants had to set up their tents and cook an evening meal at our woodland pitch.
However, this was only a third of the job done and the routes on the following days were more challenging. Battling mental and physical fatigue all 3 groups did supremely well to reach every checkpoint and ensure that they supported each other as a team. The assessor commented; ‘The groups from Riverside School met every challenge they faced head on, they showed resilience when the route became difficult and demonstrated great skill when cooking and camping independently. The most pleasing part was how well they worked together and the care and concern they had for each other.’
Overall, this year has seen 40 pupils in Y9 & 10 complete their awards. This has involved more than just the expedition but also showing commitment to volunteering to help others around school and the local community, learning new skills and taking part in regular physical activity.
