Scholastic is a literacy initiative currently used with all students in years 7 and 8. Students are assessed at the start of the year and, based on their level at the beginning, students select a reading book from the library. They read this book for 20 minutes every day and then complete a short online quiz once they have finished reading it. These quizzes allow staff to gauge their comprehension of texts and track their progress, as well as give them incentives for reading books and doing well in subsequent quizzes. Once students have successfully passed the quiz for the level they are currently on, they can move up to the next level of books. Staff are expected to encourage students to read their Scholastic Lexile books both in lesson time and in form time. All students in the school are expected to have a book from the school library with them every lesson.
